ADA Diabetes Care/Diabetes/Diabetologia Symposium—The Heterogeneity of Type 1 Diabetes: Pathogenesis, Treatment, and Prevention is the second annual joint symposium presented by the ADA’s journals Diabetes®, Diabetes Care®, and Diabetologia® at the Scientific Sessions.
The symposium will be held on Monday, June 24, from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. ET in Room W320, the Chapin Theater, of the Orange County Convention Center. It also will be livestreamed on the virtual meeting platform for registered meeting participants and will be available on-demand following the 84th Scientific Sessions.
Developed by leading investigators in the field in a closed-door expert forum earlier in the week, the program will take a bench-to-bedside perspective of the topic. Presenters will review what is currently known and identify knowledge gaps with the aim of spurring future research and translation of emerging concepts. Presentations will focus on:
- Beta-cell pathology in type 1 diabetes: immune, inflammatory, functional
- Insulin replacement in type 1 diabetes: needles, pumps, and islets
- The emerging spectrum of strategies to prevent type 1 diabetes
“This wonderful new initiative is designed to bring together a group of international experts to address a topic on which the journal editors believe much is known, but much more remains to be learned,” said Diabetes Care Editor-in-Chief Steven E. Kahn, MB, ChB. “After a highly successful inaugural event at EASD last year focusing on the gut microbiota and diabetes, we will now turn our attention to the many aspects of type 1 diabetes heterogeneity.”
A review article from the first international expert forum and symposium, “The Gut Microbiota and Diabetes: Research, Translation, and Clinical Applications: 2023 Diabetes, Diabetes Care, and Diabetologia Expert Forum,” is available online from all three journals. Participants on this year’s panel will prepare a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-science on type 1 diabetes heterogeneity for future co-publication in the three journals.
“The value of this concept has been recognized by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, which has agreed to fund this initiative through 2025,” Dr. Kahn said. “We are indebted to them for their support.”
