What is your presentation about?
I will focus on exosomal shedding by the adipocyte, a so far highly underestimated mechanism in systemic metabolic control. The adipocyte takes advantage of exosomal production for interorgan communication. Exosomes contain proteins, lipids, RNA molecules of various types as well as entire submitochondrial fragments.
What makes this topic important in 2023?
The important role of exosomal trafficking from adipocytes is a relatively recent finding and rapid progress is made in better defining the mechanisms.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
We have a broad interest in adipocyte physiology and the role in adipocytes as systemic mediators of the metabolic state of the system
How do you think your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
This is an entirely new “endocrinology” that went unappreciated to date and will have major metabolic implications.
